Arlington Door-thru-Door

Description

Arlington Door-Thru-Door provides older adults in Arlington with home care aides who can accompany them up to two times per month to non-urgent medical appointments. Aides provide assistance with dressing/preparing for the appointment, attending, and returning home afterward. Services are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Aides can be requested from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for medical appointments on weekdays. Aides are not able to carry or lift users.

Cost

The cost of the transportation for the client and aide is paid for by the client.

Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV) Transportation

Description

ANV volunteers are available to drive members to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other errands (library, bank, pharmacy, etc.) for stress-free door-to-door service. ANV also offers rides to social events it sponsors, such as luncheons, game days, happy hours, bocce ball games, picnics, and more.

Arlington Transit (ART)

Description

Arlington Transit operates 16 routes in Arlington, supplementing Metrobus with cross-county routes and neighborhood connections to Metrorail and Virginia Railway Express (VRE). All ART buses are fully accessible to riders with mobility limitations, wheelchairs, and other mobility assistance devices. ART Bus riders ages 65+ are eligible for Arlington’s reduced fare program.

Cost

Citizens age 65 and older can ride the ART bus for half price ($1.00) with the use of a yellow (Metro) Senior SmarTrip card.

Interim STAR & Temporary STAR

Description

Interim STAR is available for Arlington residents ages 60+ who have applied for MetroAccess Paratransit program and meet all criteria but have not yet been approved. Interim STAR may only be used for health care appointments. Application is made to Arlington County Aging and Disability by submitting a copy of the MetroAccess application. Normal STAR fares apply. Note: Interim and Temporary STAR trips are limited to healthcare appointments inside the Beltway in Virginia, Washington, DC and the INOVA Fairfax Hospital Complex.

MetroAccess Paratransit

Description

The region's complementary paratransit service is offered in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Unlike non-emergency medical transportation, MetroAccess is a shared ride public transportation service for people who are unable to use the accessible fixed-route Metrobus and Metrorail public transit due to disability. Note: MetroAccess can be used for any trip purpose within 3/4 of a mile of areas serviced by Metrobus and Metrorail and during their regular hours of operation. "Shared ride" means that multiple passengers may ride together in the same vehicle.

Cost

To determine if a customer is eligible to use MetroAccess, an application must be completed and certified by a healthcare professional. You can obtain an application by calling 202–962–2700 and select option 1 or TTY 202–962–2033 or by email eligibility@wmata.com.

NV rides

Description

NV Rides supports a network of volunteer driver programs who make transportation for older adults possible in the Northern Virginia area. NV Rides’ charge is to increase capacity for existing volunteer driver programs and to expand volunteer transportation options throughout Northern Virginia. Note: Some people aren’t comfortable using the interactive map—we take many phone calls. Daily-riders can also directly call a partner if they know that is the best program for them!

Cost

All programs require an application and vetting, sometimes involving a home visit. Mobility and eligibility will be verified to make sure that each rider is a great fit. No last-minute requests—all requests are made at least 5 business days in advance and must be an existing client and have gone through the application process before a request can be made. No wheelchairs (not even collapsible) and drivers cannot lift, move, touch or transfer riders.

Reach a Ride

Description

Reach A Ride is a gateway furnished by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. It provides transportation options for individuals with special transportation needs in the National Capital Region. This web site, along with an information hotline provides links to transportation for employment, health and medical services, educational services, and other needed trips. This web site includes a searchable database to allow people with special transportation needs, as well as case managers and agencies, to find transportation in the National Capital Region.

Senior Loops

Description

Senior Loops offers residents of Claridge House, Culpepper Garden, Hunter's Park at Cherrydale, The Carlin, and Woodland Hill (and select neighborhoods) free bus trips to predetermined local grocery stores. These bus trips are either weekly or monthly. Additionally, a seasonal loop from July through November is available for transportation to participating Farmers’ Markets. Note: Transportation vans are wheelchair accessible. For participation, simply complete a registration form, available at each participating residence, or contact the Aging and Disability Resource Center. Participant must call at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a ride.

Shepherd’s Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church

Shepherd’s Center provides residents, aged 50+, with rides to medical and therapy appointments, pharmacies, and grocery stores. Volunteers provide round-trip or one way ride services from the resident's home the medical appointment or other destination.

Social 60+ Café Transportation

Description

Social 60+ Café program offers participants (age 60+) a pre-arranged shared-ride service to travel to-and-from their homes to the Arlington Mill, Langston Brown, or Walter Reed cafes. Contact the Social 60+ staff to determine eligibility.

Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents (STAR)

Description

STAR is a shared ride paratransit service for Arlington residents who struggle with public transportation due to disability or the effects of age. It provides a similar level of transportation as ART, Metrobus, and Metrorail. Services are available between 5:30 a.m. and midnight every day. Note: All rides must begin and end in Arlington. One-way ride fees can range from $4.00 to $9.50. Coupon books are available at the Commuter Store and can be used as payment. All rides are free for personal care assistants.

There are eligibility requirements (residents currently certified eligible for MetroAccess are automatically certified for STAR).

STAR Assist

Description

STAR Assist provides Arlington County residents ages 60+ with transportation service to health care appointments or to visit family members in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. They provide a driver or escort from your house to your intended destination. Note: This service is available to residents with a STAR membership. Users also pay an additional fee of up to $10, which is billed after the trip.

Super Senior Taxi

Description

Super Senior Taxi offers older adults (70+) discounted fares on cabs. Older adults can purchase a taxi coupon book, at a discount of $10 (vs $20 at full price) and use coupons to pay for any trip that originates or ends in Arlington County. Rides are easily reserved as with any taxi service. Note: Coupons for residents can be purchased at Commuter Stores. Based on availability, eligible residents can purchase up to 20 coupon books annually.

Transportation for Medicaid Participants

Virginia residents who have Medicaid can arrange for non-emergency medical transportation to any appointments covered by Medicaid. For a reservation, contact the Medicaid provider directly. All reservations should be made 48 hours in advance of the medical appointment during regular business hours.

Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA)

Description

WMATA offers Metrobus, which operates hundreds of routes every day, and the Metrorail, which offers a transit service for over 600,000 people daily. Both trains and buses are equipped with wheelchair access and priority seating for older adults and people with disabilities.

Cost

All customers aged 65+ can purchase a Senior SmarTrip card (online, in local retail establishments like Giant and CVS and at Commuter Stores) which allows for reduced fares on all rail and bus services that accept SmarTrip.

WMATA MetroLift

Description

MetroLift provides reduced fares (50% off) for riders on Metrobus and Metrorail (regardless of age) who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). An application is required for MetroLift.

Eligibility

Customers must be enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
