Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV) provides help with organizing and possibly reducing the number of things at home—paperwork, clothing, decorative items and the like. ANV has a cadre of volunteers trained and eager to assist with planning and executing the task; the scope ranges from organizing one closet, room or type of item—like files or books—to a thorough downsize in preparation for a move. ANV understands that home organizing can be an emotional, intellectual and physical challenge and is ready to be your “right-hand person” as you plan and execute the task. ANV delivers donations to local thrift stores, brings unwanted but sensitive documents to the County’s shredding site, and/or gets hazardous items to the County’s hazardous materials collection point.

The Housing Grants program is a county-funded program that provides a monthly housing grant to eligible households (see chart below), including Arlington County renters who are: 65 years or older; totally and permanently disabled; clients and patients of a County operated or County supported mental health program; or working families with at least one child under age 18.

This program makes homes safer for low-income families and helps reduce energy costs. This is possible through repairs and upgrades to heating and cooling systems. The program also installs energy efficient features, such as insulation and air sealing. CHP Weatherization helps low-income individuals and families reduce energy costs by improving the energy efficiency and health of their homes using the federal Weatherization Assistance Program and other funding sources. Since 1976, our weatherization team has performed energy audits and repairs to home heating and cooling systems, especially for households with elderly residents, individuals with disabilities, and families with children.

The Arlington County Fire Department offers free home safety checks to residents of Arlington and the City of Falls Church. The fire department will assess your: home evacuation plan; frequency of furnace and fireplace cleaning; safe storage of flammable materials; smoke alarm placement; space heaters; extension cord use; safety practices in kitchens and around water; smoking habits; and other possible fire hazards.

Mary Marshall is a cheerful, supportive community for older adults with intellectual disabilities or mental illness. They offer assisted living personal care and services for adults aged 55 and older with cognitive disabilities and special needs who also qualify as low-income individuals (partner with Arlington County Department of Health and Human Services).

Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church (Rebuilding Together-AFF) makes critical home repairs and accessibility modifications at no charge for low-income homeowners and nonprofit organizations. Repairs range from installing grab bars, double stair rails, comfort height toilets, and brighter lighting to wheelchair ramps and electric stairlifts.
