Aging and Disability Service Division

Description

The Aging and Disability Service Division (ADSD) is a resource center for information, guidance, and referral to services for older adults, persons with disabilities and their caregivers via phone, in-person, and home visits. The ADRC serves the following individuals:

  • Age 60 and over
  • Under 60 with a permanent disability and one of the following:
  • Inability to perform Activities of Daily Living such as personal care: bathing, dressing, transferring from the bed or a chair, walking, toileting and eating.
  • Homebound: Someone unable to leave home or must do so with great difficulty. The individual may be able to go to medical appointments, but needs escort assistance to do so safely.
  • Caregivers, family members, or friends

Cost

There are eligibility requirements, but staff is available to provide general information and any eligibility barriers.

Arlington Adult Day Program

Description

The Arlington Adult Day Program offers support to Arlington adults who need a safe and supervised environment during the day. The goal of the program is to improve quality of life and maintain independence of participants for as long as possible. The Program serves individuals age 18 and older in Arlington County that need a safe and supervised environment during the day. Participants may be:

  • Experiencing memory loss
  • Physically impaired
  • In need of personal care assistance
  • Limited in independent functioning
  • Frail and require supervision during the day

Cost

The cost will depend on income and how you pay (e.g., private pay, Medicaid, long-term care insurance). For those who qualify, a sliding fee scale is available.

Services

The Arlington Adult Day Program offers a variety of individualized services to meet each participant’s specific needs, including:

  • Physical activities and therapeutic recreation to maintain and improve movement/mobility
  • Mentally stimulating activities to encourage expression, communication, and memory
  • Social activities to encourage interaction with others and reduce loneliness and isolation
  • Health care monitoring, medication administration, and direct access to other adult services or County services
  • Nutritious and hot lunch and snacks (for a small fee)
  • Access to podiatry, chiropractic, and occupational therapy services
  • Caregiver services include support and counseling, information and referral, and a break from daily caregiving

Arlington 55+ Program, Pass, and Guide

Description

Arlington 55+ offers a variety of programs, activities, trips, social events, classes, and guest speakers for individuals aged 55 and older. By purchasing the Arlington’s 55+ Pass, you can access a variety of fun, fitness, enrichment, and social connections. Various community centers host 55+ programs and services. The locations and information for the programs and services is included in the 55+ guide. The Arlington 55+ Resource Guide is published online quarterly and is consistently updated.

Cost

The Arlington 55+ pass is $40 per Arlington household per year, and the 55+ Gold pass is $105/year (which also provides access to all of Arlington County’s fitness facilities except for the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center).

Services

The 55+ Resource Guide includes:

  • Fitness/Exercise: aerobics, aquatics, seated exercise classes, strength training, and core strength, etc.
  • Sports: pickleball, ice skating, golf, tennis, volleyball, etc.
  • Education: art lectures, classes and workshops, computer and technology classes, language classes, music appreciation and practices, nutrition classes, and cooking demos
  • On-going Activities: billiards, bingo, book clubs, bridge, canasta, crafts, dance style programs and groups, mental aerobics, painting, etc.

The 55+ Travel program offers:

  • Accessible transportation on a coach bus
  • Seating reservation for concerts and events
  • Meet ups with diverse and friendly individuals
  • Supervised trips by trained volunteers
  • Planned trips by members of the 55+ community

  • Rental Services: information and resources to help low-income individuals/families find affordable housing in Arlington
  • Food Assistance & Free Food Resources: lists various food assistance programs and food banks in Arlington
  • Community Services Program: neighborhood educational programs and services to promote self-sufficiency and community belonging
  • Crisis/Emergency Assistance: Emergency assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, medical or clothing expenses
  • Arlington Employment Center: Services for job seekers and employers
  • Medicaid: Learn about program benefits and how to apply
  • Heating/Cooling Assistance: Provides assistance with these expenses
  • Homelessness: Works to ensure that no one lacks access to decent, affordable housing
  • Medicaid for Elderly and Disabled Persons: Provides medical and prescription coverage for these persons.

Benefits Enrollment Center (BEC)

Description

The Aging & Disability Resource Center has been certified as a National Council on Benefits enrollment center. This means we are experts in connecting older adults and people with disabilities with benefits programs that can help pay for health care, medicine, food, utilities, and more.

Library Services for Older Adults

Description

Since 1937, Arlington Public Library (made up of Central Library and seven neighborhood locations) has been the heart of a thoughtful, inclusive, and dynamic community where people and ideas connect. Nearly 90,000 people regularly access the Library’s robust collections, participate in events, make connections, seek enrichment, and learn new skills. The Center for Local History (at Central Library) collects, preserves, and shares resources that illustrate Arlington County’s history, diversity, and communities.

Eligibility

You can get a free library card if you live, work, or attend school in Arlington, or if you live in participating reciprocal jurisdictions in the DC metropolitan area.
